A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an prompt pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
