British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
