The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
