Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
