The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG Ever

The speculation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team might be building a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—elements that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
